Design of Rotary Kiln for Treatment of Hazardous Waste

    Hazardous wastes refer to the wastes that are identified according to the methods uniformly stipulated by the state and have the properties of toxicity, flammability, explosiveness, corrosiveness, chemical reaction, etc., and can cause harm to human health and the environment, such as hospital clinical waste, multi-purpose waste, etc. Chlorinated biphenyl wastes, waste batteries, waste mineral oils, waste fluorescent tubes containing mercury, etc.


    Hazardous waste needs to be treated before it can enter the environment. Heat treatment is the most effective method for hazardous waste treatment, and rotary kiln is the most effective equipment for hazardous waste treatment.


    In my country, due to the late start of hazardous waste treatment technology, hazardous wastes are mostly discharged without treatment. At present, all provinces and municipalities directly under the Central Government have started or are preparing to build provincial-level hazardous waste treatment centers, and my country's hazardous waste treatment work is gradually becoming more standardized and improved.


    A typical rotary kiln incinerator is shown in the figure, and its design is mainly divided into the following parts: the design of the size and operation mode of the rotary kiln, the design of combustion, the design of refractory materials, and the design of safety monitoring of the incineration system.


    Generally speaking, the typical aspect ratio of a rotary kiln for hazardous waste treatment is 3.4 to 4.2, and the size of the rotary kiln must be determined according to the volumetric heat load parameter. The volumetric heat load parameters of the rotary kiln are controlled to the quality of the combustion in the furnace. The range of the volumetric heat load of the rotary kiln is generally (4.2~104.5)×104kJ/(m3·h). At present, the method used in many projects to determine the size of the rotary kiln is: first, calculate the calorific value of the waste according to the composition of the hazardous waste, and then determine the heat generated by the combustion of the waste in the rotary kiln per hour according to the processing volume of the waste, and then according to The selected volumetric heat load determines the volume of the rotary kiln, and finally determines the size of the rotary kiln based on the aspect ratio of the rotary kiln.




For the operation mode of the rotary kiln, in engineering practice, the inclination angle of the rotary kiln is generally 1 to 3°, and the rotation speed is 1 to 5 r/min. Rotary kilns with large aspect ratio and low speed can be used for the treatment of hazardous wastes that are difficult to incinerate; for hazardous wastes with high calorific value and easy to burn, the burning time is slightly shorter, and a larger inclination angle and higher speed can be used.
